Barton Cup - Portsalon Golf Club

At 8.03am on the August Bank Holiday 15 year old David McCormack a seven handicapper from Letterkenny played the opening shot in the Portsalon “Barton” Cup Open Match play Tournament at the 72 par links course at Portsalon Co. Donegal. The Barton cup was first played in 1899 and is a continuous nine hole match play event played on the August Bank Holiday Monday each year. The 2006 event attracted an entry of 44. During the day 43 matches were played. At 7pm in the evening David teed off in the final having won five matches during the day. His opponent in the final was 18 year old Barry McGettigan, a six handicapper from Kerrykeel Co Donegal. Barry had commenced play at the more civilised time of 9am and he also won five matches to reach the final. In a competitive final featuring high quality golf, Barry sank a putt for a par at 8.12pm to win the final 3/2, uniquely David had played both the opening and final shots of the tournament.

Nick Faldo proudly launched the Upgraded Old Links at Ballyliffin on June

Nick Faldo spent 4 days in Ballyliffin basking in glorious sunshine along with the elite members of Team Faldo,his youth academy. The six-time Major winner took the opportunity to invite his elite group of young protégés forsome intensive links golf training ahead of their forthcoming major amateur fixtures. Team Faldo were at Ballyliffin from the beginning of the week, working with Nick on the special and diverse skills required to play traditional links golf.
