Who will come out on top to win the FedEx Cup?

FedEx Cup

Tour Championship Preview

With the final star studded event of the year, everyone is playing for the opportunity to take home the FedEx Cup. The Tour Championship takes place this weekend in East Lake with the top 30 on the FedEx Cup leader board participating. Mathematically, anyone of the 30 golfers can take the cup along with the coveted $10 million prize. Of course, for some, a lot will be needed to go their way, as well as banking on other golfers not performing over the weekend. Although possible, its still hard to envision a winner not coming from the top 5 this weekend. They have played to such a high standard and consistency all year, they will be tough to knock off.

FedEx Favorable Scenarios

The favorite to take home both the Tour Championship along with the FedEx Cup is, by no surprise, Jordan Spieth. Spieth has been phenomenal this year winning 4 events including The Open Championship. Some consistent 2nd place finishes in the past few weeks have kept him at the No.1 spot and in control of his own destiny. If Spieth wins outright this weekend, he will be awarded the FedEx Cup regardless of how his competitors do. He has played East Lake before and won, so you would feel it is his to lose.

Justin Thomas, who will be teeing off with Spieth, has had a break out year along with winning his first major at the PGA Championship. With 5 victories to his name and his recent remarkable form, he has also left his result in his own hands. A win this weekend and he will also take home the $10 million prize fund.

Another 3 who have it, that if they win this weekend will also win the FedEx Cup, are Dustin Johnson, Marc Leishman and Jon Rahm. Dustin Johnson could very well turn this year around if he manages to take home both cups this weekend. This will also have him firmly in the world no.1 position for the foreseeable future. With Leishmans win last weekend and a couple of top 5 finishes before that, he has left himself in with a great chance. Jon Rahm is another with a break out season. He managed his first win on the European Tour this year at The Irish Open  held at Portstewart Golf Club. If anyone of these 5 players are to win the Tour Championship this weekend, regardless of how anyone else in the field does this week, they will also take home the FedEx Cup.

Outside Chance

For this weekends tournament alone there are a number of golfers who could pose an upset. Justin Rose comes into the weekend in 8th position but feels he can certainly put in a performance and take home the trophy. After the playoff loss earlier in the year to Sergio Garcia at the Masters, Rose will be hoping to rectify that this weekend. The likes of Rickie Fowler, Matsuyama and Paul Casey are others who are not to be overlooked this weekend. All 3 players have found consistent form over the past couple of weeks, no more so than Paul Casey. Casey finally managed to crack the worlds top 10 a couple of weeks ago and will be looking to push on. Further down the field then you have Jason Day, with a caddie change last week, will be looking to end the season strong.

With the field filled with the 30 best golfers throughout the year, it is certain to be a memorable weekend. Around 4.40pm, Irish time, is when they first pairing are to tee off.
