This week the PGA Tour heads south of the American border to the WGC Mexico Championship

Normally taking place at the “Blue Monster” in Doral, Florida, this PGA event was recently moved to the Club de Golf Chapultepec in Mexico City in 2017. Since then the tournament has been won by Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson, who famously outlasted Justin Thomas in a playoff last year. All 3 golfers are all in attendance this weekend making it one of the strongest fields the event has ever had. 9 of the worlds Top 10 will be teeing off in Mexico with only World No. 1 Justin Rose giving the event a miss. However, in his stead World No.13 Tiger Woods will be making his first ever start in Mexico and only his second start in a WGC event since 2014. The field is also stacked with the likes of Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson and many more.

Some of the notable groups on the opening few days are McIlroy, Watson & Koepka along with Johnson, Mickelson and Thomas. Rory McIlroy has had a very promising start to his season this year and has done everything but win. He has had 3 Top 5s in his last 3 outings and is in nice form coming in to this year’s renewal. Koepka enters just his fourth tournament of 2018-19 PGA schedule with an Official World Golf Ranking of No. 2. Despite making just three previous starts on the PGA Tour this season, the two-time U.S. Open champion has already earned a victory, finishing on top of the leaderboard at The CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. Thomas and Johnson on the other hand have been anything but consistent. Thomas was obviously disappointing on Sunday at Riviera and one could excuse that as a one-off but he wasn’t great in-contention at Phoenix three weeks ago either.

The past two events have always had some stellar outside performances that have just fallen short on the final hurdle. We wouldn’t be surprised if the same outcome was to happen this weekend with it being more favorable towards a European Player based on the style of the course. Fleetwood managed to run Johnson right to the very end in 2017 and stated the course layout and feel felt very similar to one on the European Tour which gave him an edge even on his debut. Another week of exciting golf to look forward to regardless.
