Rory McIlroy has been crowned FedEx Cup Champion 2019
With a mere 7 months to wait until The Masters returns, Rory McIlroy will be sure to enjoy this victory while he can. After a splendid season that garnered him 14 Top 10s and 3 victories, McIlroy now joins Tiger Woods as the only golfers to capture the FedEx Cup more than once.
Entering into the weekend 5 shots back from Justin Thomas, under the new Tour Championship set up, McIlroy knew he had a steep task ahead of him. McIlroy aimed to shoot the lowest score for the weekend and that is exactly what he accomplished. Heading into the final round 1 shot behind World No.1 Brooks Koepka, the two were paired together again for the second time in a matter of weeks. McIlroy was looking to extract some revenge for their final round pairing in Memphis.
Neither of the pair made any major moves in the first few holes, with par after par. It was only on the 7th hole where the tide started to swing in McIlroy’s favour. An uncharacteristically wayward drive from Koepka ended up with him double bogeying the hole. McIlroy, on the other hand, sunk his putt for birdie to complete the 3 stroke turnaround. It was a lead he would never relinquish. A string of bogeys from Kopeka saw him move to 4 behind at one stage and allowed Xander Schauffele to edge into 2nd place. Even with two late bogeys from Rory to cut his lead from 4 down to 2, the contest was all but over. A par on the 16th, followed by consecutive birdies on the 17th and 18th saw him come out triumphant.
There was no love lost between Brooks and Koepka with the American quick to congratulate him. “Rory played great golf, pretty much mistake free.” Koeka said. “It was impressive to watch. Hats off to him”. Next for Koepka, a five-week holiday. “I’m going to enjoy myself”.
Rory even had a chance to reminisce about his failure at last years Tour Championship. “I didn’t enjoy that walk last year like everyone else did” McIlroy said. ” I played terribly. I got myself into the final group and never took the fight to Tiger. Going up against the No.1 player in the world today, he got one over on me in Memphis and I wanted to try sort of get some revenge. The final round in Memphis hurt a little bit. I didn’t take it to Brooks at all. To play like that alongside Brooks and get the win, win the FedEx Cup, yeah, its awesome. It’s amazing how different things can be in a year.”
